Easy to wear denim on denim looks over 60

Whether it’s denim jeans or a denim skirt, we all love wearing denim.

Around the house I might just wear my jeans with a denim shirt. It’s simple and easy to move in. But I think ‘double denim’ or ‘denim on denim’ as it is known these days, looks best when I’m wearing a third item.

Below I’m showing some easy outfits with two items of denim plus another top. You could add a jacket or coat to any of these to make a warmer look, of course.

Leaving the shirt to fall straight can help hide large hips. This is especially so if the hemline is disrupted by leaving the shirt open over another shorter top. It also helps to minimize your width is you wear a dark top with a high neck.

On warmer days, a denim skirt looks good with the new sleeker retro sneakers. But on Spring or Fall days when there’s a chill in the air, I would opt for boots. Boots look great with denim. It’s a sort of town styling with a nod to the original denim use on the ranch!

For shopping or meeting up with friends for a coffee, double denim strikes just the right note. The belt and tucked shirt looks more put together but becomes increasingly difficult to wear as my waist expands!

Ideal tops under a denim shirt are the iconic look of the white crew neck tee. But stripes add a slightly French vibe. And a patterned shirt can work too, despite there being two collars.

I hope you’ve been prompted to get that denim shirt and those jeans out of your closet. Try on various tops with them, you’ll be surprised what works. So, before you buy anything new, why not take a second look at double denim for 2026.

  1. It is 86 degrees outside here in Colorado, USA! So I wore white high waisted wide leg jeans from Chicos, a shorter pale blue tee that comes just below my waist, top of hips and white Skechers slip ins shoes to go get my haircut. I wear a pale blue chambray button down shirt as a third layer inside because of air conditioning. My arms get cold. I like jeggings from Chicos. I don’t like leggings, these are slim jeans that come to the ankle and are a lighter weight fabric than denim with very little stretch. I’m 61” tall and weigh 135-137 pounds. I’m slim though hips and thighs but my tiny waist said bye. I can hide it under tees or shirts as long as I don’t tuck. I wear a 10P or a 12P depending on the brand for jeans. Need a LP because of my bust on top. A comfortable fit is most important to me. Being retired, I need to watch my budget as well. You look cute in the striped tee, jeans and top shirt! My favorite way to dress, only without the tuck and belt.

    1. Hi Sydney. Great to hear your style notes! The weather is making the idea of seasonal wardrobes a bit outdated these days. I got back to France yesterday and all the roses are in full bloom. Time for me to get on my white trousers too. Joni

    1. Hi Heather. Everyone subscribed to my newsletter gets updates on what’s new on the blog. I’ve been travelling then unwell (minor bug!) so you won’t have had anything from me for a month. I’ve just got back to France, potted up some colour for the garden and am now back working on I’m Mother. Joni.
