Best boots 2026 for chic women over 50

How on earth to find the best boots for women over 50 online? Most styles of boot are shown on models with beautifully slim legs. But that doesn’t mean we can’t wear these boots if we’ve grown a little rounder in our years since menopause. It’s just a question of selection. I’ve scrolled through literally hundreds of boots to find ones that match the three words in this post that matter; best, chic, over 50.

Firstly I’m looking for reliable quality boots – leather or suede, a decent sole that will last and protection and support inside the boot for one’s feet. I’ve drawn my list from various online retailers, all of whom have US and UK sites and fair returns policies. Click through to the suggested boots but take a moment to look around at the other offerings. I’m hoping you may find a new brand to fall in love with.

Chic boots, for me, means in line with current trends but not trendy. Boots that can be worn smarter or more casually but always ‘put together’. I wouldn’t expect these styles of boot to look old fashioned for at least a decade.

Thirdly I ask ‘Would I wear these boots?’. I’m 76 and I would wear all these except, perhaps, the western style boots. If I were invited to more fun parties, then, sure, I’d love to turn up in cowboy chic. But alas, party invites are thin on the ground after 65, aren’t they?

So I’ve suggested these styles for women over 50 because it’s around that time we start to change shape and to want less fast fashion and more comfort that lasts. But even if you’re 80+, most of these boots will make you look great.

Best smart knee-high boots

These are boots that work well for both day and evening and can elevate an outfit, especially a dress, for a smart occasion. They tend to be narrower than other styles to give a less clumpy look. I’ve chosen styles that look great without being too extreme – so no high heels, kitten heels or very pointed toes. That said, if you have a very wide foot or large calves then the leather may never stretch to accommodate you in comfort.

Madewell’s Lexie high boot features a small stacked heel for chic that is easy to walk in. I love the tapered squared toe which lends this high boot a stylish modern look. It has comfortable padding inside but this style will need some breaking in.

The Bridget boot by Sezane comes in shiny black leather. It is a good compromise between a riding boot style and a smart fashion boot. A sturdy heel, an almond shaped toe and a low platform sole mean all-day comfort.

Best riding boots

Talbot’s all-leather riding boots have so many features to aid comfort. The stretch side panel allows for any width of calf. The low heel and rounded toe typical of the riding boot style will make for safe and easy walking combined with plenty of support and padding on the interior. Perfect for everyday wear.

I bought these Marks and Spencer black riding boots this year and I love them. They have a good heel height – just enough to make me feel a little taller yet very stable. The discreet silver buckle at the ankle gives them a smarter vibe that works well for country or city outfits. You can see me modelling these boots with skirts and a dress.

Best ankle boots for women over 50

Anthropologie has so many interesting styles of high and short boots. This is a retro style lighter-weight worker’s boot in soft leather. The side view is similar to a boot we know in the UK as desert boots but these have cool ‘Puritan’ stitching across the uppers. This ankle boot comes in lots of sandy colors and is the perfect boot to wear with socks. In case you haven’t noticed socks are very much in fashion in 2026 by the way! Comfortable, adjustable via the laces, fast to break in, so stylish – what’s not to love?

The Fatface Evelyn Chelsea boot sold through Next is a useful allrounder. It’s pull-on and has a sturdy tab at the back to help – always desirable after age 60! The sides have the signature Chelsea elastic panels for a good fit whatever one’s ankle size. This edit has the slightly chunkier sole in fashion today. Great under jeans or, as in the photo, with a skirt and socks if you have the courage!

Best boots for bad weather

Here is my choice of bad weather boots. These Marks and Spencer rubber boots – or Wellies as we call them in the UK – are designed with us in mind. An elastic side gusset allows for wider ankles, the back tab helps you to pull them on while the rear kick spur aids removal – always a hassle with taller rubber boots. Wear for dog walking and gardening or under jeans or track suit bottoms anytime the weather is stormy and wet.

Best warm boots

I just adore these Borg lace-up boots from Marks and Spencer. The thick grippy rubber sole is perfect for really wet weather and the Nordic-look lacing and over-all cute warm furriness of them makes them a best seller. Tuck in your pants and wear with your biggest puffer jacket or coat for winter through Spring warmth and style.

These Vivaia warm boots are fully waterproof as well as being cozy. Ideal for frosty and icy days with their thick grippy soles. Pull-on tabs front and back plus a warm knitted cuff between boot and leg. Lots of colors and the choice of ankle boots or mid-calf boots.

Best biker boots

Biker boots take a bit more confidence to wear but they have been on-trend for years now, including for us older ladies. They work best with a skirt – think denim, or a dress – think feminine. It’s the juxtaposition of two very different styles and textures that make the biker boot fun to wear. I mainly wear mine under a puffer coat with a warm wool skirt for winter urban walks. This version by Clarks features their very comfy insole and lining.

Best cowboy boots

These are what I’d call ‘posh cowboy boots’ though as a Brit I have no idea what cowboys wore! Western boots have been a huge success over the last few years as they look fab poking out beneath jeans and even cooler worn under a summery cotton dress – in any season. These Dingo 1969 Henley boots at Anthropologie are beautifully made in embossed leather. No wide fittings though – but with their signature pointed toe they are probably not ideal for wider feet. I guess I’ll never own a pair of cowboy boots unless I go back to that line-dancing class I did 20 years ago.

Best slouchy suede boots

Anonymous are famous for the comfort of their boots. These Jasmine 20 suede boots come in lots of colors and in leather. They are pull-on and tend to be quite wide in the foot and the toe area. They are simply the perfect slouch boots. A Danish brand, they sell worldwide and all duties and tariffs are covered in their US and UK prices. Slouch boots look perfect in Spring, and even in summer, beneath pretty frocks, woolen skirts or denim dresses, worn with big sweaters on cooler days.
