11 Short Haircuts super-easy to maintain for women over 50

Here are my 11 favorite very short haircuts for women over 60. I like them because they are low maintenance. So if you’re thinking of a very short hair cut take these pictures to your stylist and ask her or him which would work well for your hair type.

Tousled silver hair cut in layers at top and very short at back and sides
Forward swept tousled gray pixie cut

This forward swept pixie cut cleverly builds height at the front by sweeping all the longer hair on the top of the model’s head forward. Then a hot brush styler can give movement. The long front bangs (fringe) add a youthful vibe to this look.

Silver gray hair with longer layers and bangs
Longer softly styled layers and a fringe (bangs)

This is one of the more traditional short haircuts. Ideal if you like classic style. The long layers are swept to the back giving height at the rear crown. I like the longish bangs to soften the face. This hairstyle gives a well-groomed look. Use self-grip rollers and spray the roots of the hair before combing through with your fingers. Finish with a light hairspray.

Blonde highlights in short thick hair
Smooth layers in short thick hair

If your hair is naturally thick then this youthful hair cut can work well for you. In this image the model has – I believe – added a clip-in short hairpiece to give maximum volume. You could do the same. But that volume isn’t essential. Myself, I like a less forced look where the back of the hair is well cut down the back of the head then tight into the nape of the neck and lies naturally against the head.

Silver pixie cut with textured layers
Short textured layers pixie cut

This hair style looks great on most women. Keep the hair quite short around the back and sides, cut in medium length layers all across the top, then wave gently. Finally pick out a few short waves and spray or use a mousse or sticky balm to ensure they add a choppy surface to the top of your head.

Curly hair very short cut

If you have naturally curly hair then you can use similar short haircuts to the one above. No need to use any tools on this hair type. For everyday wear leave the hair as it falls naturally (as in this image). For an evening out, add a glosser and push the front hair back a bit to catch the light. Finally lift a few curls and separate from the rest of the hair, adding your glosser or a finishing oil to highlight them.

Pepper and salt hair cut close to the head
Rippled waves with gray highlights in short hair

This rippled waves hair style is also very similar to the short haircuts above. But the front fringe and the top hair is all finger-styled and fixed to sweep backwards off the face. The gray highlights around the face add attractive focus. Ideal for straighter hair in good condition.

silver and grey very short hair cut
Very short pixie cut for wiry or coarser hair

If you have thick and coarse or wiry hair here’s a style made in heaven for you! After a good hair cut which leaves the minimum hair around the back and sides, you only need to rub product through your top hair to lift it up. With the right cut, renewed every few weeks, this is the one-minute hair style for busy women.

Boyish hair cut for older woman
Short gamine hair style

A similar hair cut to the one above but leave the top hair a little longer and give it boyish charm by allowing the layers to lie flatter. Sweep the front of the hair to one side and spray in place as a short fringe. This is one of the short haircuts that works well even if you have thinner or finer hair.

Rear view of short gray hair style
Rear top of head volume for very short gray hair

A pixie cut needs regular strict cutting especially at the back. Here’s a close-up showing how the hair length is graduated with the top layers finger-pinched into waves.

Short neat hair cut for older woman
A retro pixie crop with side parting (part)

A neat and well-groomed hair style. Slightly shorter than the gamine cut above and cutting some of the hair on the rear crown short enough to stand up, adding just a touch more height. The more defined side part (parting) adds a retro vibe and the gray strands highlight the model’s face well.

Very short layered cut for silver hair
Very short straight layers for sporty hair style

This style is similar to the retro look above, but it is left more unstructured. The choppy fringe adds to the casual sporty vibe.

Regular cutting is essential. As is getting the color just right. But once you have those basics in place all these short haircuts are a breeze to maintain.

  1. Hi Joni!
I went to a ruffled short pixie about a year ago and I love it! It is a breeze to care for with a little max hold mousse and my comb and fingers. I let it air dry then comb out the crunch and finger it a little and done. It is so much easier than the bob I wore for several years. My friends like this much better on me. My hair is naturally white and silver streaked and is wavy in the back. I need to go and get it trimmed every six weeks. Hope all is going well with you and your daughter and grandchild.

    1. Hi Sydney. It’s great to hear about how you manage your short hair. I think your comments will be very useful to anyone reading this and worrying if they can keep their style as easily as promised! Joni

  2. I wear my hair like the lady in red. The longer layered pixie is like my white with silver streaks hair. I’m thinking of going ever shorter like the tousled shorter pixie. My hair grows very fast and needs to be cut every 4-6 weeks. I love the ease in care of these short styles and being petite, everyone seems to like it. I’m 80 now Joni but style is still my middle name!

    1. Hi Sydney. Yes, I agree that us shorter ladies can often look really good with shorter hair. I’ve cut my bob to as short as I can without shaving the back. Not sure if I yet have the confidence to go really short – love the idea and the look…..but still jittery!! BTW, you asked a couple of times for me to change the email for receipt of your newsletter. I’ve looked into it. I can’t change your email (security reasons) so: Ideally you would unsubscribe using your older details (use the unsubscribe button at the end of any newsletter you’ve received) then you would have to use the SUBSCRIBE button on the site to enter your new details. Joni.
