The new wider jeans: my try-on at 77

Do you always buy your ‘favorite’ jeans?  It takes a long time to find the right pair of jeans which fit your particular figure.  So, once we find the right pair,  most of us buy the same jeans again and again.  This post is to tempt you to at least try on today’s new wider jeans.  I’m trying on two styles, both wider than I would normally wear.  One style is straight and quite wide.  I’ve heard these called cowgirl jeans. The other is straightish and very wide.

Jeans and a slightly fitted shirt

I’m well over 70, short and, I’ll admit, quite overweight these days.  I have a layer of fat everywhere, except my forearms, but my belly is now really quite prominent.  I think many of you who are over 60 will have similar weight issues.  So take a look at the photos and decide if this is a look you would wear.  For younger and/or slimmer readers, I hope the try-on, even so, will help you decide if today’s new wider jeans could be for you.

The truly straight jeans with a fitted shirt

I rarely wear anything fitted these days due to my large waist but I wanted you to see exactly how these styles of jeans looked with a heavy mid-section.

The straighter dark wash jeans make this outfit look a bit too masculine, I feel.

Trying on jeans with a simple straight-cut tee

The belt helps both pairs of jeans to look ‘intentional’. The short sleeves help the balance of the dark wash look.

The tee works fine with the wider jeans too, for a casual look. We’ve all got used to wide linen pants by now. But denim doesn’t float around you the same way as linen. This makes the wider jeans a more difficult style choice, in my opinion.

Putting an overshirt on top of the tee and jeans

I always feel better once I have a top layer on! It hides so much of my middle. Both jeans look good with the overshirt hanging out. And I like the slouchy vibe of the pale wash jeans here.

I really like the straight lines of the baggy shirt then the very wide jeans. Below you can see that the less wide jeans give more attention to your rear, though not as much as most jeans do.

I started looking out for jeans that offered more space around the waist and belly areas because my favorite jeans are very tight now, and emphasize my excess weight. I saw that altogether looser, wider jeans were trending. For decades women have relied upon jeans to hug their rears and squeeze their thighs. These new wider jeans don’t do that.

Jeans and a relaxed zipped top

The slightly blouson shape of the cardigan makes a good contrast with the straight jeans here. And it helps to camouflage my waist.

This is a very slouchy look. I’d wear it around the house or on the weekend. Quite a fun style really – especially at my age!

Wearing jeans with a buttoned jacket style cardigan

I think the straighter less wide jeans come into their own with this more structured jacket. This is a look I feel confident in, wherever I might be.

This very casual styling works well, I feel. I’d wear it to meet up with my daughter and three-year old granddaughter for a day out, for example. Lots of ease of movement and not giving the impression I’m expecting a posh lunch hahaha!

Let me know what you think of these styles. Would you wear either of these pairs of jeans?

I bought these jeans especially for this try-on from Cache Cache – a French-based inexpensive retailer. And I’ve decided to keep both pairs.

To be honest, I didn’t think I’d look much good in the pale wash wider jeans. I thought they would look a bit foolish. But in fact I prefer the wider jeans. They camouflage my extra weight better and they hang well. But they are slouchy and therefore very casual. But my life as a retired women is very casual too, most of the time.
