The 25 Best Cardigans Fall 2024 for Older Women

I’ve picked out my favorite 25 cardigans for Fall 2024. I’ve chosen great-looking pieces at a range of prices, from inexpensive man-made fibres to luxury cashmere.

As I’m writing here for older women like myself, I have selected classic cardigans with a good range of sizes and a less fitted waistline.

These ‘shopping lists’ of clothes suitable for women over 50 are here to inspire you, to suggest retailers you might not have purchased from before, and to keep you up to date with what’s available without you needing to spend hours online.

Basically, I scroll so you don’t have to.

Classic cardigans from Everlane

Everlane is a great place to find lots of basics in good colors and today’s shapes. Here’s their popular 100% cashmere classic. I love that you can make these cardigans into twin sets.

I like the modern dropped shoulder and boxy fit for their cotton cocoon cardigan. It comes in three beautiful earth shades. Ideal over a tee with jeans.

Eileen Fisher smart cardigans

Minimalist luxury that looks simply perfect whether to the office or over jogging pants at the weekend. The Silk Bliss cardigan is mainly cashmere with some silk. It has a slight boucle effect. Hits at mid-thigh.

A traditional ‘woolly’, easy to throw on over anything when the temperature starts to drop. A mix of mohair and other wool to give a beautifully relaxed autumnal look. Today’s dropped shoulder seam and easy fit make it as much in demand by my daughter as by me!

On trend cardigans at Mango

This contrast hem cardigan is so cute! Especially when worn over the sleeveless vest of the same color. Viscose and polyester mix make this a fine knit at a very accessible price.

The button knit cardigan from Mango looks wonderful buttoned, half-buttoned or open over a vest or tee. I like the structured look and slightly French vibe.

Textured cardigans from Talbots

Cable knits in cream or ivory are a staple in everyone’s wardrobe. This cable knit with cotton at Talbots is the perfect thickness for a Fall day.

This tweed cardigan with wool and cotton is a stylish alternative to a jacket. Worn over a shirt or tee, you can take it off and roll it up in your tote bag when the day brightens up. Perfect for travel.

Colorful cardigans from Boden

Knitted in a wool cotton mix, the Edie is Boden’s update on fair-isle. Beautiful colors!

Boden’s Holly is a knitted jacket that hangs well. It comes in many colors. I love its structure which works so well for a wider waist like mine. I bought one for my daughter recently and she adores it!

Eva by Boden is 100% cashmere and washable. It comes in nine great colors. I’ve bought lots of these over the years and am definitely considering the Eva in this year’s top color – pine green.

This fine knit wool cardigan by Boden looks best worn as a top rather than a layer. Perhaps wear a silk vest or cami underneath. Five feminine colors for Autumn.

Boden’s warm wool textured stitch cardigan is longer than most of their designs – it hits at low hip. Ideal for a colder day. Three on-trend colors.

Luxury knitwear from Brora

Cashmere spun in their own mill in Scotland makes Brora’s longer length ribbed shawl cardigan an object of desire. In four subdued autumnal colors, this easy-to-wear cardigan says elegance. (The Brora links below these images lead to the UK site but you can change to your preferred country site from there at the top right.)

Famous for its Fair-isle cardigans, Brora has two new colorways in cashmere for Fall. I usually size up in Brora shortish cardigans. My own one has lasted for years.

This super soft edge to edge alpaca cardigan by Brora is a relaxed top layer perfect for autumn walks and lunch round the fire at a country pub.

If cashmere runs a little above your price threshold then this Fair-isle cardigan in lambswool by Brora is a delightful alternative. It epitomizes British country chic.

Good value cardigans at Macy’s

I love the hang of this Macy’s classic V-neck three button cardigan. The shortish length, the wider neck band plus the dropped shoulder make this a great choice over a shirt and jeans.

Here’s a well-structured cardigan by French Connection that will look smart over tailored trousers or jeans.

The drop shoulder and wider cut of this cable knit cardigan at Macy’s looks good over a masculine shirt or a roll neck.

Marksandspencer.com

A soft and breathable cardigan in an interesting textured finish. I think it looks better open over a bright or black top.

An easy-to-wear longer ribbed cardigan from Marks and Spencer’s. I have this cardigan and love it. I wear it over thin close-fitting tops or a silky vest. I like the long line without adding extra bulk.

This manmade fibre with wool Argyle pattern crew neck cardigan from Marks and Spencer is soft and cosy. The classic pattern adds a touch of class.

Marks and Spencer is well known in the UK for quality cashmere at a reasonable price. I have been buying them for decades! This V neck cardigan in Capuccino looks so elegant with its dropped shoulder and wider fit.

Marks and Spencer’s cloud yarn cardigan works well for a smart look or a more casual look with jeans or cord pants. I like to wear this style open over a tee – though not as open as in this image!

  1. I’m a big time 70++ sweatergirl year round
Definitely eyeing the Talbots Channel look turquoise tweed
I’m also loving the open front fuschia you show first
Can you tell me where it’s from?

    1. Hi Janice. Yes those cardis look great don’t they. If i lived in the States I’d probably buy that talbots textures one – useful length tho longer than I’ve been buying for a while. The fuschi scallop edge cardi – if you click on the link under the image it will take you to the (usually) US page for the product. It’s from Boden USA

  2. Joni I bought the Macys cable knit cardigan in light blue! What a great price! Even I could afford the sweater. I enjoyed looking at all of the beautiful pieces but can only wear cotton or synthetic knits due to allergies. I do love a cardigan in the long cool and colder months here in Colorado, USA.
