Frame your face with the elegantly poised Jess disc occasion hat by John Lewis & Partners.
Crafted from classic millinery fibre for a lightweight, robust and sheer quality, the hat presents an upturn side disc placed on a wide silken headband. Finally, the disc is adorned with swirl detailing and stylised feathers.
This hat measures 28 x 25cm
Colours. Navy, Platinum Grey, Bright Pink, Off White. I tried the pink – a vivid fuchsia.
Fit. The fascinator is attached to a broad shiny headband which sits securely against your head and positions the hat to one side. It would be possible to cover the band with hair if your hairdresser were pulling your hair back into a loose low bun for example. But hair left down couldn’t really cover this wide band. So you need to be sure you are happy to have the band showing. Most of the photos on the site do not show the band but the Off White one seems to show it, so I presume it is designed to show.
The fascinator was very lightweight and it felt very secure. I would have no worries about this hat on a windy day.
Style details. A really stylish hat which needs a little confidence to wear. It gives several inches of extra height to your silhouette. The brim is turned up to one side giving you a sophisticated look and you can wear it quite far over your eye to enhance this look. On top, nestled into the upturn of the brim there is a large mesh double bow with a stiffened narrow ribbon bow on top of that. Plus there are a couple of swirls of ribbon and a couple of feathers quivering at the top.
So quite a busy hat but very elegant. The colour is beautiful and rich and will make a great contrast for a pale dress. For a more co-ordinated look and perhaps a less dramatic one, you might choose the grey or off-white depending on your outfit.
Fabric. 80% Sinamay, 10% Polyester, 10% Feathers. Do not wash.

It has a chain strap which you can tuck inside and the outside has classic pleated detail. It fastens with a simple popper. It’s the sort of useful little bag that you will often take out with you for evening as well as formal day dos.
Colours. Navy – to match the navy Jess hat – or Nude to pair with the other Jess colours.

VERDICT
Jess is almost a hat and a bit more than a fascinator. Let’s call it a hatinator. It is striking and elegant enough for a Mother of the Bride and can be teamed with a more restrained bag and shoes to give a chic modern look. I love it! Just make sure you are happy for the hairband to be noticeable beneath the hat.
