Capsule Wardrobe Fall/Winter: Cool New Looks From Talbots

From everyday activities to special get-togethers – here is a classy but casual mini Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe for women over 50, selected from clothes by Talbots.

I’m loving how Talbots are – finally – showing more stylish designs.  So, I thought I’d put together a mini capsule wardrobe for the end of Fall, showing what I’d buy right now if I lived in the USA (I live between the UK and France so it’s difficult to try a whole wardrobe of American items on!).

Lifestyle looks and color palette

I see this capsule as taking me from my everyday lifestyle: shopping, walking, snuggling on the sofa in front of Netflix etc. to slightly classier events such as a Thanksgiving family party or lunch in a nice restaurant with a friend.

I’m going for an elegant tone-on-tone look as it is easy to achieve and very on-trend today.  With ivory as a base color I’ve added darker tones all the way through to this year’s popular color: chocolate.

Three essential bottoms: leggings, pants, skirt

I started with bottoms.  Although I wear pants almost every day, I decided I also really wanted to find a dress or skirt that would suit a smarter event.  Here’s what I went for:

Straight leg stretch corduroy pants in Ivory.

Talbots is stocking lots of good colors including fashionable burgundy and various shades of brown in these straight leg pants.  However, as this year we see paler shades carrying on through from spring and summer, I thought I’d indulge in this delightfully fresh off-white pair for this little Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe.  Ivory cord trousers will be a staple of a classic wardrobe year-round for the foreseeable future, I have no doubt.

Corduroy suggests outdoorsy moments as well as everyday life.  I’ve chosen a pale color which allows for a smarter ensemble when needed. The fine gauge of the cord makes these pants adaptable to indoor events by adding a lightweight top, or a day in the country under a sweater and jacket.

These pants are high waisted so no worries about showing rolls of fat where lower fitting jeans can cut into the belly or upper hip.  These don’t need to be tight fitting to look good.  So if in doubt,  size up.  They should be snug, with enough ease at the widest part of the hip/thigh to allow the trouser legs to fall straight.  If that means the waist is a bit wide for you, no matter, I am including a belt in this capsule.

Soft stretch ribbed high waist leggings in Purple Garnet.

Leggings are ideal for lounging at home and we do plenty of that in the colder weather.  This reddish-purple is less dramatic than black and we’re seeing tones of this color everywhere this Fall.  It makes for a subtle contrast against dark brown.  Under ivory tops it helps to make legs look longer and narrower.

Leggings are worn today with sneakers, loafers and inside boots.  This gives lots of possible outfits – from a sweater and/or jacket with sneakers for shopping, with loafers for a trendier look and with boots for a winter outfit.

These leggings can even go under the skirt I’ve selected. The footwear can instantly vary the smartness of the look in this mini Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe.

Wool blend split-hem skirt in Frost

As I scrolled through the Talbots website I was finding it difficult to find a skirt I thought could be both relaxed yet classy enough for a special family party.  Lots of nice cord and denim options but too casual for what I needed.  Then I saw this drapey, warm midi skirt and fell instantly in love.  It is casual enough to wear with leggings and shoes or sneakers for coffee with friends but elegant enough to wear over boots to make a bigger impression.

It’s a wool blend and should be easy to roll up and pack, unlike so many smart skirts.

The only drawback is getting the length right.  If it’s too long I think it would need to be professionally re-hemmed.

I looked through every dress Talbots offers but sadly, found nothing that was both smart enough and sufficiently in touch with this season’s looks for this Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe.  I very much like dresses and it’s a pity Talbots (and most other retailers) don’t make more winter styles that hit that space between party-frock and everyday styles for mature women

Versatile tops: shirts, turtleneck, cardigan

Shirt 1: Everyday relaxed shirt in White.

Perhaps a little late to the party, Talbots in the last couple of seasons has been offering some tops that are not waisted.   As we get older, most of us don’t look much good in waisted shirts which means we can only wear them for their collar and cuffs, hidden beneath a sweater or blazer.

This slightly over-size button-up shirt in cotton poplin can be worn on its own or as an under- or over-layer with any of the bottoms I’ve selected.  It makes an attractive tone-on-tone outfit with the frost skirt or ivory cords.  Or layer it over the cotton turtleneck and under a jacket. Tuck the shirt in with a belt for smart, or leave to hang loose and long for a relaxed outfit.

Shirt 2: Soft satin charmeuse shirt in Soft Sand.

Try saying that fast!

Again, a straight-cut top in really excellent on-trend colors.  If you follow this blog you will know that I am not a fan of the American bright colorful outfit.  I have a more European take on color.  It’s great to see Talbots offering both looks this year.

I’d wear this flowy, shiny top in the same ways as the poplin top, but the outfits would then look more dressy.  Rock a party vibe with this shirt over the cords with the sleeveless metallic padded gilet.  Or add this shirt to the wool skirt for an elegant outfit.

Perfect turtleneck in Ivory.

This underlayer in cotton mix will add warmth to all outfits when needed.  But it also highlights your face and lengthens your upper body with its high neck.

Merino wool cashmere link stitch cardigan in Granite Gray.

Button-up cardigans are more useful in a small capsule wardrobe than sweaters.  This one comes in two interesting tones and I’ve chosen a grayish tone to blend with, but not match, the other pale shades in this collection of clothes.

The buttons are ideal for a country look but the overall impression is still elegant enough to work as a top or top-layer over the wool skirt.  It will sit well fully open or buttoned to near the top over the shirts and the turtleneck.  And it will add warmth and bulk to the padded gilet over the sleeker skirt or leggings.

I would wear it over the shoulders of the white shirt or even the zipped fleece jacket with sneakers, to make  a sporty outfit on a cooler day.

Top layers: two very different jackets

Jacket 1: Fleece collared jacket in Java.

This is an easy to wear and easy to layer zip jacket in dark brown Tencel – the sort of item you can roll and pack.  Perfect over any of the tops to build up your upper body so the skirt, cords or leggings make your hips seem smaller.

Today you can mix sporty athleisure items like this with even the smartest of skirts. Just add sneakers to look confident and well put together.

Jacket 2: Quilted puffer vest in Metallic Gold.

This versatile gilet adds holiday sparkle to an otherwise conservatively tonal set of clothes.  For shopping it will make you feel a million dollars over the turtleneck and cardigan with the leggings or pants and the penny loafers.  Or go full-on fun by popping it over the silky shirt and wearing the knee-high boots under the skirt.

The fur collar – right on trend – is detachable so this jacket can be worn indoors too.  Over leggings, it’s long enough to cover the widest part of the hips/thighs, or let the long white shirt hang down beneath it to give you a taller silhouette.

Useful footwear: Sneakers, penny loafers and knee-high boots.

Gola Daytona blaze sneakers in gold and brown

I’ve selected a pair of the new season sneakers with a brown stripe. They will work for a casual look with any outfit. But the gold will also echo the gold of the puffer jacket and the belt buckle to add extra sparkle to this Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe 2025.

Tish stretch quilted leather boots in Dark Walnut

Knee-high boots are coming back into fashion this winter. Wear them over the leggings and under the skirt and with any of the tops for a cozy and well-styled outfit. These riding boots have a useful stretch panel so you should be able to wear them over the cords too – a traditional look for autumn.

Cassidy suede penny loafers in Cognac

Turn up the bottoms of your cord pants and wear the classic loafers with fine socks, or pull on wool socks over the leggings. Fold the wool socks over to make a thick cuff to get this year’s look. If you like this style make sure you size up if necessary.

These loafers have a country-style grippy sole but the suede makes them perfect for indoors too, with any of the bottoms. Balance the clumpier shoe with thicker layers at the top – a shirt with the cardigan and one of the jackets would look good.

Accessories: A neat belt and simple bag

A leather belt in Tan with a gold-tone buckle carries on the gold highlights and adds a well-styled vibe to any of these outfits, especially the cord pants

A medium crescent-shaped shoulder bag in Dark Walnut suede converts to a pretty handbag for special events, day or evening. Wear it across the body for everyday activities. This is a great wardrobe staple for Fall through Spring.

Much of this mini Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe is discounted so is great value right now (November 2025).  If you have family asking what you want as a Christmas gift, share this list!  Otherwise, I hope it gives you inspiration to update your outfits this year and take another look at Talbots, who are really upping their game.

  1. I’ve always felt the same about Talbots, especially all the colors, and seldom shopped there or even opped in to see what was available. You’ve piqued my interest and I’ll have to stop in to see what’s available. Tmely post!

    1. Hi Barb. Yes, take a quick look. I so hope that Talbots gets new clients with their new looks, otherwise of course they’ll just revert to their rather boring designs that sold well previously. A decade or more ago Marks and Spencer was the Talbots of the UK. Then they really shook up their offering adding cool on-trend looks to their mumsy stuff. Now, they are purchased by every age group and quoted in the most fashionable online and offline magazines. My daughter always checks them out first when looking for something classic but fashionable – it’s made buying for eachother so much more fun!

  2. Hi Joni!
It has turned cold and grey here in southern Colorado, USA. We have not had any snow yet which is late for us. Warm wool socks and booties, my heavier jeans, straight cut style in dark brown, a light blue tee under my newer pale blue sweater from Old Navy will keep me warm. I was up until four this morning with a fire alarm that kept peeping without any fire. My angry husband finally got the ladder out of the garage and took it down. I vacuumed it and wiped any dust off and he changed the batteries again, just did it in October hence the anger. Our dog was panicked and shaking. I was getting ready to call the fire department to come and do something as my 84 year old husband doesn’t need to be up on a ladder. So we seem to have fixed the peeping problem. But sleep was very short for both of us. I hope you are having a better day. Enjoy your weekend and thank you for all of the chilly weather ideas. Sydney

    1. Hi Sydney. Hahaha! I’ve had nights like that! No longer have a husband but my dog gets frightened in storms and even just heavy rain and barks until I switch on the light and attend to him. That’s the small price of sharing one’s life with another – human or canine! Joni
