25 Chic Feminine Tops for an Older Woman

This year tops, especially blouses, are going full-on for a feminine touch.  Expect to see lace, organza and other lightweight semi-transparent fabrics, eyelet lace – or broderie anglaise as we call it in the UK – frills and ruffles, large round collars and big balloon and puff sleeves.  That beautiful feminine figure-enhancing style – the peplum – is making a comeback too.  The boho take on feminine style shows beautiful embroidery and flouncy sleeves.

Here’s my pick of the 25 best feminine tops for Spring into Summer.  I’ve tried to include various price points.  So if you’re not sure how often you will wear something so frilly or flouncy, then stick with a less expensive iteration.  If you find you love it, you can always add something at a more ‘investment’ price.

Three lace-edged Madewell tops that hide a wide waist

Wide at the waist, this shirt is ideal for wearing untucked to show its pretty lacework.

I’d wear this shirt with just one side tucked into a belted waist to disrupt the line at the waist.

Three-quarter sleeves are perfect for most older women, yet look so feminine.

Three easy to wear romantic Dillard’s blouses

Most of us love straight tunic styles over close-fitting pants. But this top with its fun frilly sleeves is so much more!

If full-on frills and lace leave you cold, join the feminine tops trend with this cool navy linen top with balloon sleeves.

You would look ready for Spring in this stunning lace top – and when the sun is hidden, pop on a simple edge to edge cardigan or jacket.

Three colorful feminine Boden tops

This works with jeans as here, or with a skirt if you’re a guest at a wedding!

If you’re more boho chic than lace and frills, you’ll love this feminine shirt over jeans or tailored pants

Simple summery shirt with fabulous sleeves.

Four stylish on-trend tops at Macy’s

Here’s the quintessential 2025 frilly feminine blouse. You likely need a little vest underneath, then you’re ready for those Spring and summer outdoor events – wear over jeans, over a sleek navy skirt or with wider beige linen pants.

Your go-to casual top with its pretty pattern and tulip shaped sleeves.

Trimmings are everywhere this year and I love the retro feminine look of bobbles and ric-rac braid.

Tucked into tailored pants with a structured jacket, this could take you to a more formal event. Or wear as here over narrow pants for a casual look.

Three super-stylish boho-inspired blouses at Anthropologie

This dreamy ultra-feminine top will look fabulous day or evening. The pin tucks which stop at the waist make a sort of soft peplum. I find a peplum works well to give me a feminine shape to my hips despite my large waist.

Beautiful sleeves for a French chic vibe.

The wide round edged collar marks this shirt out as super stylish. A romantic slightly puffed sleeve and gathers at the wrist suggests eighteenth century style.

Three simple feminine tops from Talbots

What a pretty top for sunny days.

The embroidery gives this simple top a boho femininity.

Scallop edged sleeves and a lace insert turn this traditional shirt shape into a Springtime winner.

Two inexpensive chic lace tops at Target

I just adore that scalloped V-neck.

Such a sweet broderie blouse.

Three popular romantic blouses at Marks and Spencer

Smart and easy to wear, this could be your Spring staple this year.

Wear with a flouncy skirt and sandals or front tuck in to dark wash jeans to wear with sneakers.

I buy several white tee shirts every Spring – this year I’ll buy this one I think – so understated yet feminine.

One drop-dead-gorgeous feminine top for Spring by FarmRio

FarmRio makes the adorable clothes that all make a big statement. You’ll need bags of confidence to wear this beautifully draped top but it will become your long-term ‘investment’ piece.

  1. The white eyelet tee shirt is more to my simpler taste and style. It would have to be soft and require no ironing so let all of us know. It gets very hot here in the high mountain desert of Colorado, USA. I tend to live in shirt sleeve tees or linen shirts, crinkle shirts breathe well and flutter sleeve cotton/rayon tops all with Bermuda shorts or knee skimmers which are shorter than capri pants and look better on my 5’1” inch petite frame. However, like you, my little waist has gotten fluffy as I’ve aged. Joni, I am 80 years old now! So older than you but understand similar aging issues for clothing choices. It is good to hear from you!

    1. Hi Sydney. Good to hear from you. Yes feminine shirts are more fun than practical but it’s fun to have one at the ready in case that summer lunch with friends materializes.
